New Zealand’s native flora is striking and unique, often appearing unfamiliar to those newly arrived on its shores. For generations, immigrants have brought plants with them longing for the comfort of what once was home. These plants, some grown for food or income, others simply for beauty, speak to the deep human need to root ourselves in new soil while holding onto our past.

Growing up, we lived in a house with a pond out back that my dad planted several water lilies in. The flowers always looked so serene floating on top of the surface. Even without a pond, my dad would grow water lilies in pots for the beauty of them. He gifted one to me 2 years ago for a small pond we made in my back yard.
