New Zealand’s native flora is striking and unique, often appearing unfamiliar to those newly arrived on its shores. For generations, immigrants have brought plants with them longing for the comfort of what once was home. These plants, some grown for food or income, others simply for beauty, speak to the deep human need to root ourselves in new soil while holding onto our past.

Living in Japan, I became enamored with the beauty of sakura blossoms. They are one of the prettiest flowering trees in my opinion. Sitting under the trees eating and drinking with friends, is a wonderful memory.  Japan uses cherry trees as gifts, helping cement ties between them and friendly nations. Across the street from me, up at the top of Skyline, there is a small grove of Sakura gifted to Rotorua by Japan.
